A man who was wed and then fatally struck his close friend on the same day has been sentenced to prison. James Shirah, aged 24, will serve a minimum of 30 years behind bars after admitting to second-degree murder and related charges. Expressing regret in court to the family of Terry Taylor Jr, he stated, “The only way I can make amends is to apologize and show remorse for the rest of my life… I will always be sorry.”
The incident occurred in Flint on August 30, 2024, when Shirah, following a dispute fueled by alcohol at a gathering celebrating his marriage to Savanah Collier, hit 29-year-old Mr. Taylor. Despite Shirah’s attorney arguing that the crash was not deliberate, prosecutors contended that Shirah fled the scene and returned later to strike Mr. Taylor with his vehicle after having time to reconsider.
During the sentencing in Flint, Judge Khary Hanible remarked, “I do not view you as a criminal, Mr. Shirah, but as a perpetrator. There was nothing accidental about what happened.” Shirah had previously entered a no contest plea to second-degree murder, driving with a suspended license, and leaving the scene of the accident.
Defending Shirah, Harrell Milhouse described a situation escalated by alcohol and a heated argument among longtime friends. Before the sentencing, Eren Taylor, the victim’s cousin, expressed a desire for strict punishment, stating, “I hope that they throw the book at you.”
Shirah’s spouse, who will face sentencing in May for being an accessory, had admitted guilt in April during a court appearance. The couple had exchanged vows at a pizzeria just hours before the tragic events unfolded.
