Sean McCann, the younger brother of Madeleine McCann, is eagerly anticipating his participation in the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Glasgow 2026. Sean, aged 21, is set to compete in swimming events at the Games this weekend. Madeleine went missing in 2007 at the age of three, while Sean was just two years old at the time.
Primarily a distance freestyler, McCann is set to take part in the freestyle relay competitions at the scaled-down Commonwealth Games. Madeleine’s disappearance in 2007 triggered a global search effort, with her still being missing and presumed deceased.
Having excelled in sports in recent years, Sean is looking forward to the summer Games. He expressed his excitement, stating, “I’m very excited, it’s my first senior games so I’m just looking forward to representing Scotland and doing my absolute best.” Sean emphasized the significance of representing Scotland at the Commonwealth Games, particularly in his hometown of Glasgow, where he has family support.
Reflecting on his journey, Sean highlighted the supportive environment at Loughborough University, where he is a student. He appreciated the competitive training atmosphere and credited it for his progress in swimming. Sean shared that his decision to study Chemical Engineering at Loughborough was influenced by the university’s reputation for nurturing distance swimmers. He praised the campus facilities and the overall environment for athletes, emphasizing the positive impact on his training experience.
The opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games will feature King Charles delivering a speech on unity and togetherness. The event, headlined by KT Tunstall, will be held at Glasgow’s OVO Hydro, known for hosting major music events. The ceremony will include a diverse program of music and entertainment, symbolizing the spirit of the Games.
