Tram services in Manchester city center came to a standstill this afternoon due to a Britain First march taking place. Supporters of the far-right group gathered at Store Street near Manchester’s Piccadilly station around noon, before marching to St Peter’s Square just before 1:10 pm. A counter-protest by anti-racism groups under the name Resist Britain First also assembled at Piccadilly Gardens. Visitors were advised to expect significant disruptions to roads and Metrolink services.

The Bee Network announced the closure of stops at Piccadilly Gardens, Market Street, and St Peter’s Square due to the planned protest, with no cross-city tram services in operation until further notice. The Metrolink suspension was initiated after counter-protesters obstructed the tram tracks in the city center, but they were later removed by the police.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) confirmed that they are working to minimize disruptions and ensure safety in the Piccadilly Gardens area. Extra powers have been granted to the police to address any troublemakers during the protests, including a Section 34 dispersal order for the city center and a Section 60 order granting additional stop and search powers and allowing the removal of face coverings.

Authorities mentioned that the majority of individuals from both sides are not causing any problems. GMP stated that officers are ensuring the safe protest rights of both groups, with the march proceeding towards St. Peter’s Square as planned. A large police presence was deployed for the protests, following previous violent incidents during a Britain First march in February that led to 11 arrests and clashes with counter-protesters.

The police are closely monitoring the situation and are prepared to maintain public safety during the demonstrations.
