President Donald Trump made a controversial joke referencing Pearl Harbor during a meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi today. The moment caused a noticeable reaction in the room, with the Prime Minister’s initial smile fading. Despite the awkward remark, the meeting proceeded with discussions on various topics.

Prime Minister Takaichi visited the White House for the first time following a recent snap election victory in Japan. This visit came after Trump had shown support for her during his visit to Japan the prior year. Ahead of the meeting, there were concerns given Trump’s recent public statements about seeking support in the Strait of Hormuz, an issue Japan has not agreed to assist with.

During their conversation, a Japanese reporter questioned Trump about his decision not to inform US allies, including Japan, about military actions in Iran. Trump defended the secrecy, emphasizing the element of surprise in their strategy. He then attempted to lighten the mood with a reference to Japan’s historical familiarity with surprise tactics, but the attempt at humor fell flat when he brought up Pearl Harbor, a sensitive topic for Japan.

Moving on to other subjects, Trump asserted that the US military was operating freely in the region, despite conflicting reports. Meanwhile, Tulsi Gabbard, Trump’s Director of National Intelligence, faced scrutiny in Congress for evading questions regarding the rationale behind the Iran conflict.

Amidst the discussions, Trump requested an additional $200 billion for military expenses related to the conflict with Iran, citing the volatile global environment as justification. However, his funding request faced skepticism, with some likening it to a vague plea for money.

Regarding the deployment of ground troops in Iran, Trump denied any plans for such action but maintained the authority to deploy military forces as needed. In a separate development, two FBI officers were reportedly dismissed for their involvement in investigating Trump’s election challenges, sparking legal action against the Bureau for alleged unjust termination.

The lawsuit filed by the agents seeks reinstatement and challenges the grounds for their dismissal, suggesting political motivations behind the firings. The FBI declined to comment on the matter as the legal proceedings unfold.
