A renowned UK educational institution with a 742-year legacy, Ruthin School, is permanently closing its doors, causing distress among students. The co-educational boarding and day school in North Wales will cease operations at the end of the current term.

The decision to close the school was announced by the Galaxy Global Education Group, a Chinese-owned entity that acquired the school in early 2023. Additionally, Durham High School, also owned by the group, will be shut down.

Over 100 staff members are facing job losses, and around 240 families are now seeking alternative education options for their children following the closure, as per North Wales Live.

Established in 1284, Ruthin School holds a significant place among the oldest educational institutions in the UK. The school will be placed under financial administration upon closure after the summer term.

Despite its esteemed history and academic reputation, the school’s financial challenges have led to its closure, according to North Wales Live. The school was recently recognized as the top independent school in North Wales in The Sunday Times Parent Power Guide 2026 and was featured among the leading boarding schools in the UK by the Independent Schools Council.

Expressing deep regret, Galaxy Global acknowledged the sadness surrounding the closure of Ruthin School, stating that despite efforts to secure its future, a sustainable path forward could not be established.

A parent from Ruthin School expressed surprise and sadness, sharing the emotional impact on their child. Another parent from Mold conveyed shock and uncertainty about the future educational journey of their children, reflecting the sentiment of many affected families.

A parent of a Durham High pupil disclosed that students were instructed to clear out their belongings as the school prepared to shut down. Families who had recently paid school fees were caught off guard by the sudden closure announcement.

In a poignant message, it was highlighted that the school’s closure marked the end of a 742-year legacy, with well-wishes extended to others facing similar circumstances.
