Heineken has announced a £44 million investment in its UK pubs. The brewing giant from the Netherlands will use the funds to enhance 647 pubs within its 2,350-strong Star Pubs estate this year. The initiative involves revamping 108 pubs with costs exceeding £145,000 each, leading to the creation of approximately 850 jobs.
The refurbishment project will focus on creating distinct spaces for drinking, dining, and sports or entertainment, with particular emphasis on sports-themed venues in preparation for the upcoming World Cup. Additionally, Heineken will experiment with a new modern pub concept tailored to appeal to younger adults, transitioning from daytime offerings such as coffee and workspace to evening activities like DJs, open-mic sessions, and live music.
Most of the pubs in the program are under group ownership but are operated independently by licensees. Heineken has already invested £328 million in British pubs since 2018, with ongoing efforts including the reopening of eight boarded-up pubs among the 52 locations currently undergoing work.
This investment initiative comes at a challenging time for the pub sector, grappling with escalating costs, reduced consumer spending power, and higher National Insurance employer contributions. To alleviate some financial pressures, pubs have received additional business rates support from the Government.
Lawson Mountstevens, the Managing Director of Star Pubs, has called for governmental assistance in reducing the tax burden on pubs. He emphasized the significance of investment in maintaining pubs as preferred social venues and supporting their financial sustainability in the face of mounting operational expenses.
Mountstevens stressed the urgency for comprehensive reforms in business rates and reduced taxation, including VAT and beer duty, to safeguard the future of pubs. He urged the government to collaborate in enhancing the pub industry and highlighted the job creation potential of such investments, providing valuable work opportunities for young individuals nationwide.
