A man is standing trial for the alleged murder of his wife, a former beauty queen and Miss Switzerland finalist. The accused, Marc Rieben, is accused of gruesomely attacking his partner with various tools and blending her remains. During the trial, he tearfully claimed that his wife’s death was accidental and professed his love for her. If convicted, Rieben could face a life sentence. The court proceedings began with Rieben expressing remorse for causing his family immense pain and taking responsibility for his actions.
Rieben also disclosed that prior to the tragic incident, the couple had been undergoing counseling despite their passionate relationship. He acknowledged his admiration for his wife’s entrepreneurial success and ambitions. Additionally, he revealed offering financial support to his children and his wife’s parents as a gesture of goodwill.
The court questioned Rieben about the timing of his financial assistance to the family, to which he explained that he wanted to show support to the bereaved parties, irrespective of the court’s decision. The trial, which is taking place over two years after the victim’s death, is anticipated to conclude on May 13. The prosecution alleges that the murder was motivated by the victim’s request for a divorce, which the accused rejected. The indictment details a violent encounter where Rieben allegedly physically assaulted his wife, leading to her agonizing death.
Due to privacy laws in Switzerland, the victim and the accused are identified as Thomas L and Ivana L in local media reports. The trial is ongoing.
