The grandmother of the individual who fatally stabbed Henry Nowak in Southampton expressed sorrow over the impact of the incident, stating that it has caused significant distress for both families involved. Vickrum Digwa, aged 23, was found guilty of murder and sentenced to life in prison for the violent stabbing of 18-year-old Mr. Nowak in December. Digwa claimed he was racially abused by the victim during the attack, despite Mr. Nowak’s desperate pleas for help as he lay wounded.

In the aftermath of far-right unrest in Southampton exploiting Mr. Nowak’s death, Digwa’s grandmother disclosed that family members are contemplating relocating due to safety concerns. Bimla Kaur, 75, shared her anguish over the situation, emphasizing the emotional turmoil faced by their family as they grapple with supporting Digwa while coming to terms with his actions.

Concerns for the safety of Digwa’s father and brother escalated following his conviction, prompting them to seek refuge in a secure location. The family is uncertain about returning to their residence, as threats and fears of further violence persist. Despite deep roots in Southampton, the family remains apprehensive due to the ongoing threats they have received.

The tragic encounter between Mr. Nowak and Digwa occurred near Digwa’s residence, with the judge revealing that a confrontation ensued after Mr. Nowak noticed a knife carried by Digwa. The judge noted that it is a religious obligation for Sikhs to carry a kirpan, a type of knife, at all times. Subsequently, a confrontation unfolded, leading to Mr. Nowak’s tragic death and a call to the authorities by Digwa’s brother, alleging a racially motivated attack.

The unfolding events have left the entire family living in fear, unsure of their safety in the city they have long called home. The repercussions of this incident have deeply impacted both families involved, highlighting the tragic consequences of violence and discrimination in the community.
