Experts have raised concerns about the presence of dubious cosmetic products labeled as “snake oil” in the UK market through Amazon. A parliamentary committee delved into the unregulated environment of the cosmetics industry in the UK, highlighting instances like a skin cream derived from toxic frogs.

During the Science, Innovation, and Technology Committee session, it was revealed that Kambo, a hazardous substance extracted from the giant monkey frog, was among the products being unlawfully sold. Richard Knight, the lead officer for cosmetics and beauty at the Chartered Trading Standards Institute, emphasized the risks posed by unregulated sellers utilizing the Amazon platform.

The committee also discussed the use of Kambo, a skin cream made from secretions of Amazonian tree frogs, which has been associated with severe health issues including fatalities. While Amazon stated that it does not retail Kambo, concerns were raised about the influx of such products into the market.

Mr. Knight highlighted the prevalence of unsafe cosmetic items such as UV nail gels and skin lighteners, cautioning against these “snake oil” type products that may not adhere to the UK’s stringent regulations. The committee also touched on the dangerous practice of capturing nocturnal tree frogs in the Amazon rainforest to extract toxic substances for cosmetic purposes.

The Mirror’s campaign, “Ban the Cosmetic Cowboys,” gained attention due to reported cases of Britons contracting sepsis and facing complications from cosmetic procedures like tummy tucks and Brazilian butt lifts. Furthermore, the hearing addressed the issue of injecting fillers into the penis for enlargement, prompting discussions on the necessity of implementing stricter regulations within the industry.

Amazon emphasized its commitment to customer safety by ensuring that all products comply with legal requirements and Amazon policies. The spokesperson detailed the rigorous verification process for prospective sellers to prevent fraudulent activities and promptly remove any violators from the platform.
