A reduction in Government tariffs is expected to lead to lower prices for staples such as baked beans, bananas, and olive oil.

Chancellor Rachel Reeves has pledged to decrease the cost of essential items amidst rising prices due to ongoing conflicts in the Middle East.

A list of more than 100 common goods is set to benefit from targeted tariff reductions, in addition to the first mileage rate increase in 15 years. The proposed changes span various everyday products, including fresh produce, oils, baked goods, confectionery, sauces, and soft drinks. The public consultation on these adjustments will run until June 24, with the implementation timeline yet to be determined.

Regarding the situation in Iran, Ms. Reeves emphasized the importance of mitigating economic impacts on households and businesses. Measures such as freezing fuel duty, raising mileage rates after 15 years, and temporarily reducing VAT aim to alleviate financial burdens on consumers and promote spending during the summer months.

The proposed tariff cuts will affect a range of products, with the full list yet to be disclosed.
