From the time Robert Bush handed over the keys to his Hull funeral home to the staff, a dreadful secret started to unfold. Bush had gone on a vacation to the United States, leaving Legacy Independent Funeral Directors under the care of temporary workers. He gave them a peculiar instruction not to enter the locked back area of the premises.

Concerns escalated among workers when a body was brought in and placed in the chapel instead of the mortuary, accompanied by a disturbing smell. On March 6, 2024, a staff member flagged down a passing police car to report their worries, leading to a shocking discovery inside.

Police officers found 35 bodies at the rear of the funeral home, some stacked on shelves. Surprisingly, 31 of these individuals had already had funerals, with their families believing they had been laid to rest. Among the deceased were bodies that should have been cremated long ago, including a stillborn baby left unattended for nearly two years.

A specialized diving unit was summoned to handle the decomposing remains, leaving even experienced officers disturbed by the gruesome scene. Another local funeral director, Kevin Moxon, expressed that storing the deceased under such appalling conditions was a horrific sight.

Subsequent investigations unveiled that financially struggling Bush had been providing incorrect ashes to grieving families, deceiving them in a vile scheme.

Two and a half years later, the former funeral home stands empty, marked by broken windows and “To Let” signs. However, deep wounds linger for families impacted by Bush’s atrocious acts, with many grappling with uncertainty regarding the final resting place of their loved ones.

Bush’s disregard for the deceased was evident throughout the funeral home’s damp and decaying rooms. Personal mementos meant for coffins were haphazardly scattered on the floor, along with a significant amount of family photographs, jewelry, and a teddy bear.

In addition to the bodies and family keepsakes, piles of ashes were discovered. While some were identified, others remain unknown, resulting in heart-wrenching situations. Even those familiar with Bush fell victim to his deceit, with a widower receiving ashes not belonging to his late wife.

The magnitude of Bush’s deceit was staggering. Some mourners unknowingly wore jewelry or tattoos created from the remains of strangers. The impact of his actions was profound, leaving families grappling with grief and disbelief.

As the legal proceedings unfolded, Bush admitted to numerous charges related to improper burials and theft from various charities. The repercussions of his actions have reverberated through the community, prompting calls for stricter regulation of the funeral industry to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
