Children diagnosed with asthma are advised by experts to maintain their inhaler use even during school breaks to avoid potential life-threatening situations. Medical professionals observe a spike in asthma attacks in September, attributing it to parents reducing or ceasing their children’s medication intake during the summer holidays, especially in warm weather. Failure to adhere to asthma medication during this period increases the risk of hospitalization at the beginning of the school term.

Asthma, a respiratory condition affecting approximately one in every 11 children, manifests through symptoms like coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath. Parents are urged to be vigilant for signs such as chest or stomach discomfort. Louise Tipping, an NHS respiratory nurse at Birmingham Children’s Hospital, emphasizes the importance of maintaining asthma treatment routines to prevent attacks post-summer vacation disruptions.

Official statistics from Asthma + Lung UK indicate a substantial surge in hospital admissions due to asthma attacks among children aged five to 14 in September compared to August. The data highlights a significant increase in hospitalizations for five to nine-year-olds by 370% and 10 to 14-year-olds by 307%. Notably, boys in the specified age group are more susceptible to asthma-related hospitalizations than girls.

Asthma & Lung UK echoes the message, underscoring the need for consistent medication adherence to ensure proper asthma control during the transition back to school. Establishing and maintaining medication routines several months before school resumes is crucial for the medication to be effective in preventing asthma exacerbations.

Ensuring children stick to their prescribed asthma medicines is vital for their well-being as they return to school, safeguarding them against potential asthma attacks.
