A woman had to undergo amputation of both her legs following a severe cough episode at a family wedding. Denise Dibrell, aged 52, fell ill during the event in Tennessee in July 2025, experiencing breathing difficulties due to the persistent cough. Upon returning to her home in Las Vegas, Nevada, she tested positive for influenza A.
Denise was rushed to St Rose Dominican Hospital after her condition worsened, leading to respiratory distress and subsequent sepsis. Medical intervention included induced coma and vasopressor medication to manage her deteriorating health. Her brother, David, observed her feet turning black due to compromised circulation to her extremities.
Following a month-long coma, Denise woke up on August 18, 2025. Subsequently, she underwent a double leg amputation below the knee on September 15, 2025. The recovery process has been challenging, with Denise now equipped with prosthetic legs and gradually relearning to walk.
Expressing gratitude for her survival, Denise highlighted the struggles she faced, including blood clots and low blood pressure affecting her feet. Despite the physical and emotional toll, she remains resilient and determined to overcome the obstacles in her path.
Denise’s journey also involved setbacks post-amputation, including infections, blood clots, and the need for additional surgeries. Coping with memory loss and physical therapy, she remains optimistic about her progress and the resilience she has exhibited throughout her recovery process.
Financial challenges, job loss, and personal losses have further added to Denise’s hardships. With physical therapy suspended due to lack of insurance coverage, Denise’s road to complete recovery faces obstacles. However, she remains hopeful and determined to navigate through these challenges with a positive outlook and a strong will to overcome.
