A close friend of a woman who was fatally stabbed by her partner and later died in an explosion in their London residence testified in court about the man’s uncontrollable fits of anger and a history of abusive conduct.

Clifton George, aged 45, faces accusations of murdering Annabel Rook, aged 46, following a dispute at their residence on Dumont Road in Stoke Newington on June 17, 2025.

Although George has admitted to causing Rook’s death through manslaughter, he denies the charge of murder, attributing the fatal stabbing to a loss of self-regulation.

During the trial at Snaresbrook Crown Court, Sian Davlin, Rook’s best friend, revealed that she initially hoped for the couple’s relationship to succeed but changed her stance upon learning about George’s abusive tendencies.

Ms. Davlin disclosed that she sympathized with George and believed in the potential for their relationship to improve with therapy initially, but her perspective shifted upon discovering the recurring patterns of abuse.

The court heard accounts of George physically assaulting Rook, including hitting, strangling, and stabbing her multiple times before setting off an explosion that destroyed their home.

Describing her observations of the relationship, Ms. Davlin, who works as a refugee immigration solicitor, pointed out George’s tendency to overreact to minor issues and his volatile temper during arguments.

She noted instances where George displayed aggressive behavior, including a situation in a London park where he reacted defensively to being asked to calm down, accusing her of stereotyping him.

Ms. Davlin also highlighted George’s insecurities and his habit of misinterpreting jokes, along with instances where he belittled, fat-shamed, and manipulated Rook.

The friend detailed numerous altercations between the couple over the years, citing George’s recurring anger outbursts and his refusal to engage in rational discussions.

Furthermore, Ms. Davlin recalled a message Rook sent her sister expressing concerns about the relationship’s sustainability shortly before her death.

Rook, a prominent figure within the social enterprise sector, co-founded MamaSuze, an organization that supports refugee and migrant women through creative activities and workshops.

Despite George admitting to manslaughter and arson charges, he denies the accusation of murder, with the trial ongoing.
