A judge has sentenced a former soldier to five years in prison for a relentless and frightening campaign of harassment against his ex-partner, branding him a danger to women. Michael Ferndale, 52, was found guilty of stalking his ex-partner, Kate Watkin, by spreading false accusations including domestic abuse, fraud, espionage, and more after their relationship ended. The judge at Isleworth Crown Court, Hannah Duncan, described Ferndale as a high-risk individual to his victim and any potential future partners, highlighting the severity of his actions.

Ferndale, a graduate of Sandhurst Military Academy and a former member of the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards, attempted to tarnish Watkin’s reputation and career by spreading outrageous lies to her employer and others. Judge Duncan condemned Ferndale’s manipulative behavior, stating that his actions were akin to blackmail and had a devastating impact on Watkin, leading to job loss and emotional distress.

During the trial, Watkin recounted the terrifying experiences she endured over nearly two years, including Ferndale’s attempts to control every aspect of her life by contacting various individuals and organizations associated with her. She expressed fear and anxiety caused by Ferndale’s relentless harassment, which affected her self-esteem and overall well-being.

Despite defense claims of Ferndale’s charitable endeavors and military service, the prosecution emphasized the disturbing nature of his actions, which escalated to sending threatening messages and false accusations. Watkin’s decision to relocate to Abu Dhabi to escape the harassment underscores the profound impact Ferndale had on her life.

The court heard how Ferndale’s behavior became increasingly erratic and disturbing, leading to his arrest following a report by Watkin. The prosecutor highlighted the detrimental effects of Ferndale’s actions on Watkin’s mental health and daily functioning, transforming her from a confident individual to one plagued by anxiety and distress.

The case serves as a stark reminder of the serious consequences of stalking and harassment, underscoring the need for legal intervention to protect victims and hold perpetrators accountable for their actions.
