A Nationwide bank teller has been sentenced to prison for embezzling money from vulnerable customers to fund extravagant vacations. Kelly Kershaw, 54, drew suspicion from colleagues due to her lavish lifestyle, which included luxury trips showcased on her social media. Over a span of 11 months, Kershaw, who had been with the bank for 17 years, manipulated cash withdrawals from elderly clients in Caernarfon, North Wales.
An internal investigation by Nationwide revealed that Kershaw targeted five victims, including an 85-year-old man and a 49-year-old individual with learning difficulties. She confessed to stealing a total of £8,605 but was found to have reimbursed customers £12,630. In court, Kershaw admitted to committing fraud in multiple instances between 2023 and 2024, citing a compulsive spending addiction as the underlying cause.
The judge, Timothy Petts, emphasized the need for a custodial sentence to deter similar misconduct by bank employees. He condemned Kershaw’s betrayal of trust, stating that her actions undermined confidence in financial institutions. Consequently, Kershaw was sentenced to 16 months in prison. While all affected customers have been compensated by Nationwide, a proceeds of crime hearing is scheduled to address the losses incurred by the bank.
