Ian Watkins, the disgraced former member of the band Lostprophets, faced intimidation for money while incarcerated at HMP Wakefield. Prior to his tragic death by stabbing on October 11 last year, Watkins was targeted with threatening letters demanding payment under the threat of violence. The court heard that he was referred to as a “snitch” in the letters and instructed to pay £500 for specific items.

Two individuals, Rico Gedel and Samuel Dodsworth, are currently on trial for Watkins’ murder and possession of a makeshift knife within the prison premises. Watkins, who was serving a 29-year sentence for child sexual offenses, was identified as a vulnerable inmate due to his past notoriety and perceived wealth. Prison officer Simon Rothwell described Watkins as a target for bullying because other inmates were aware of his financial situation.

Rothwell recounted a conversation with Watkins where the latter expressed concern over receiving threatening letters. Despite Rothwell’s advice to self-isolate, Watkins declined, indicating a false sense of security. Following this interaction, Rothwell alerted prison staff about the situation and the threatening letters.

The court was informed of the contents of the letters, which warned Watkins of severe consequences if he failed to comply with the demands. One letter explicitly threatened violence if payment was not made by a specified deadline. Another note accused Watkins of being a snitch and demanded compensation for items allegedly taken away from the sender.

Witness statements from workmen at HMP Wakefield detailed the aftermath of the incident, with accounts of Watkins seen with visible injuries and bloodstains. One witness described Watkins holding his neck, while another observed a significant wound on his collarbone and jaw. Immediate assistance was sought from prison staff upon discovery of Watkins’ injuries.

In 2013, Watkins was sentenced to 29 years in prison along with an additional six years on license after pleading guilty to various sexual offenses, including the attempted rape of an infant. The trial regarding his tragic demise continues as further details emerge.
