In a distressing revelation, a father named Richard Lee, aged 76, has uncovered a fraudulent scheme where an individual is posing as his long-lost daughter, Katrice Lee, who went missing 45 years ago in a suspected abduction. Katrice disappeared on November 28, 1981, on her second birthday while she was at a shopping center in Germany, where Richard was serving in the British Army.

Richard, a retired sergeant major with 33 years of military service, has been determined to unravel the mystery surrounding his daughter’s disappearance. However, he was recently alerted to an American woman claiming to be Katrice and launching a fundraising campaign in February.

Identifying herself as Heather McCord, the woman solicited donations to facilitate her journey to the UK for a DNA test to verify her identity. Despite raising $225 (£166) on GoFundMe, Richard suspects the fundraising effort is a deceitful ploy.

Expressing his outrage, Richard stated, “I was enraged upon learning about this scam. While my objective is to locate Katrice, their motive is solely financial gain. This impostor was exposed by a friend of my daughter Natasha, who noticed the deceitful donation campaign using our content and my interviews.”

According to Richard, the woman manipulated emotional cues by fabricating a story to elicit sympathy and generate funds. He emphasized the dubious nature of her claims and highlighted inconsistencies in her narrative, indicating a pattern of fraudulent behavior.

Richard condemned the woman’s actions, denouncing her attempt to exploit their family tragedy for personal gain. He emphasized the importance of resolving the case truthfully and expressed his unwavering commitment to uncovering the facts surrounding Katrice’s disappearance.

The family has reported the incident to the UK Military Police, who are collaborating with US authorities to investigate the woman’s claims. Richard remains resolute in his pursuit of answers, stating, “I will persist until I find closure. Love endures, and that is my primary focus.”

Throughout the years, Richard and his family have encountered various individuals falsely claiming to be Katrice, leading to instances of harassment and deception. Notably, legal actions were taken against impostors in 2014 and 2019, underscoring the ongoing challenges faced by the family.

The GoFundMe campaign initiated by the imposter includes a plea for assistance in proving her identity and reuniting with her family after 44 years of absence. Richard and his family remain vigilant in their pursuit of truth and justice amidst these distressing incidents.
