Holidaymakers in Tenerife were surprised by unusual weather conditions while relaxing on their sun loungers, with a series of unexpected experiences reported at the popular vacation spot. Every year, numerous tourists flock to the Canary Islands seeking sunshine and relaxation, but some have shared that their recent trips did not meet their expectations.
The issue was raised by a man identified as Sam T, who described the weather in Tenerife as “misleading”. By sharing a video filmed from his sunbed, capturing the sky above, he sparked a widespread discussion about how other travelers’ holidays were affected by the same surprising weather phenomenon.
This is not the first time this concern has been raised. Just a few weeks earlier, visitors had expressed similar frustrations.
While trying to soak up the sun on his sunbed, Sam noticed a sudden change in the weather. As he recorded the sky, the clear blue sky quickly turned cloudy and grey, accompanied by thunder and lightning. The video garnered attention, prompting many to share their own experiences at the popular destination.
One person commented: “I don’t understand the hype about the Canaries. The beaches are not attractive, and there are always clouds.” Another wrote: “I’ve been here since the 19th, and the weather has been so unpredictable. It’s cloudy then sunny. Disappointing, really.” A third person added: “The weather is terrible. Little sunshine, constant clouds around the mountains. Five more days, then I’m heading home. Never coming back. Might leave early. This has been the biggest letdown of the year.”
Although Sam acknowledged that it has been warm during his stay, he mentioned that there has been “persistent cloud cover” for a significant part of the time. He revealed that despite visiting Tenerife multiple times before, this was the first time he experienced such prolonged cloudy weather.
Another traveler shared: “I was here from the 15th to the 22nd, and the weather was fantastic!” Someone else replied, “It’s still extremely hot, though.”
Additionally, another visitor mentioned: “I’ve been here since April 18th. It’s been consistently in the mid-20s every day – scorching!”
Important Information:
Typically, Tenerife is not known for being a cloudy destination, but it does have distinct microclimates. The northern part tends to be lusher and more frequently overcast, while the south enjoys consistently sunny and pleasant weather.
Cloud formations often form over the central mountain ranges, sometimes drifting towards coastal areas, especially between September and May. However, it has been observed that weather patterns in the Canary Islands have been more erratic than usual this year. Early in 2026, Tenerife experienced uncharacteristically bad weather, considered some of the worst in over a decade. March saw the impact of Storm Therese, bringing heavy rainfall, strong winds, flash floods, and even rare snowfall at higher elevations.
The storm caused significant travel disruptions and numerous flight cancellations. It is no surprise that the weather conditions on this popular holiday island have been a topic of discussion in recent weeks.
