Asda has been recognized as the most cost-effective supermarket in the UK for purchasing major brand items. In a study conducted by consumer organization Which?, Asda outperformed its competitors Tesco, Sainsbury’s, and Morrisons.

Despite facing a decline in market share, Asda managed to surpass its rivals, even when factoring in the special pricing offered by competitors to their loyalty program members. Which? also highlighted the impact of loyalty schemes such as Tesco’s Clubcard and Sainsbury’s Nectar, revealing significant price discrepancies for non-members.

The analysis by Which? focused on 241 popular branded products, including Heinz, Nescafé coffee, and Mr Kipling cakes. The total cost of these items at Asda in March was £813.16, making it more economical compared to Tesco, Sainsbury’s, and Morrisons. Tesco, despite offering discounts to Clubcard holders on 142 items, was still £11.50 pricier than Asda. Sainsbury’s and Morrisons also trailed behind Asda in terms of pricing.

For the second consecutive month, Which? discovered that Tesco and Sainsbury’s were more expensive than Waitrose for customers without loyalty cards. Discounters like Aldi and Lidl typically offer the best prices overall, but they were not included in this comparison due to their limited range of branded goods.

The research shed light on the significant price gaps between loyalty cardholders and non-members, emphasizing the potential savings for those who opt out of loyalty schemes due to privacy concerns or eligibility issues. Reena Sewraz, Which? Retail Editor, emphasized Asda’s consistent affordability for branded products and highlighted the unpredictability of loyalty schemes, urging consumers to consider straightforward pricing options like Asda’s.

Statements from Sainsbury’s, Tesco, and Waitrose spokespeople defended their pricing strategies and commitment to delivering value to customers. The comparison of grocery prices revealed Asda’s leading position in affordability, showcasing its competitive edge in the UK supermarket landscape.
