The Victims’ Commissioner commended the relentless advocacy of grieving families following the approval of a new law to ensure criminals are held accountable. Claire Waxman praised the families of Sabina Nessa, Zara Aleena, Jan Mustafa, and Olivia Pratt-Korbel, for their perseverance despite the absence of their cowardly killers during sentencing hearings. The Families channeled their immense sorrow into purposeful campaigning, leading to the enactment of the Victims and Courts Bill that grants additional punishment to criminals evading justice.

Under the new law, offenders who refuse to face justice may face up to two extra years in prison or an unlimited fine. Furthermore, disruptive individuals during sentencing may be subjected to penalties such as solitary confinement or restrictions on gym and work programs. The legislation marks a significant achievement for bereaved families who have tirelessly advocated for justice following the refusal of heartless criminals to face consequences. The Mirror’s Face Justice campaign also played a pivotal role in calling for legal reforms.

Among those pushing for change is Cheryl Korbel, mother of Olivia, who advocated for ‘Olivia’s Law’ after her daughter’s tragic demise due to a drug dealer’s actions. The campaign was also supported by relatives of other victims like Zara Aleena, Jan Mustafa, and Sabina Nessa. Ms. Waxman highlighted the families’ unwavering efforts, emphasizing that the changes in the law were the result of their persistent campaigning and determination.

The Commissioner underscored the importance of offenders attending their sentencing hearings, providing victims and families with a crucial opportunity to speak out. She lauded the families for their long-standing campaign, noting that the reform was a testament to their refusal to be sidelined and their commitment to shaping the law through their experiences.
