A heatwave expert has raised concerns about the ideal conditions created by the current heatwave for a potential surge in mosquitoes.

Mosquitoes, known for their blood-sucking habits, are a common summer annoyance not only during foreign trips but also in various parts of the UK, which is home to over 30 native species. With the increasing frequency of hotter weather, experts caution that mosquitoes could become more active due to the acceleration of their life cycle caused by higher temperatures.

The warning highlights the possibility of mosquito species capable of transmitting diseases such as dengue fever and Zika establishing themselves in the UK in the coming years as the climate warms. Dr. Mojca Kristan, an assistant professor in medical entomology at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM), emphasized that the current weather conditions in the UK are conducive for mosquitoes. She explained that mosquitoes thrive in warmth and require standing water to lay their eggs.

While invasive mosquito species capable of spreading viruses like dengue fever and Zika are not yet established in the UK, Dr. Kristan pointed out that these diseases are already present in parts of Europe, particularly around the Mediterranean. Moreover, eggs of the Asian tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus) have been discovered in the UK.

Modeling studies suggest that by the 2060s, the climate in London and surrounding regions may support the endemic transmission of dengue fever. Dr. Kristan emphasized the importance of staying alert to the potential threat of new disease-carrying mosquito species as climate change increasingly makes Britain a suitable environment for mosquitoes to thrive.

She also highlighted that warm weather accelerates mosquito egg hatching, and female mosquitoes require blood to aid in the development of their eggs. To prevent mosquito bites, Dr. Kristan recommended using insect repellent, wearing long sleeves to cover skin, and putting on socks in the evening, as mosquitoes tend to bite around the ankles.

In terms of health risks, dengue fever can cause flu-like symptoms, chikungunya may induce fever and severe joint pain, and Zika poses particular dangers during pregnancy, potentially leading to miscarriage, stillbirth, and birth defects.
