A large-scale search operation is currently in progress in Germany following a fatal incident where a woman was killed and 16 individuals were wounded as a van crashed into Berlin’s Pride festival. Chancellor Friedrich Merz condemned the attack as an assault on society, identifying the suspect as 21-year-old Abdul Ballout, who reportedly drove the vehicle into the crowd before fleeing the scene.
Apart from the injuries caused by the van, multiple people were also stabbed. Authorities cautioned the public against approaching the suspect, describing him as potentially armed and dangerous. Law enforcement expressed strong suspicions that the incident was an act of terrorism.
Key details regarding the Berlin Pride attack are as follows: a white van entered Tiergarten park in central Berlin around 10 pm local time, colliding with several individuals and a tree during the closing event of the Pride festival, known as Christopher Street Day, following a significant parade in the city center.
Witnesses recounted hearing a loud noise followed by screams, with one witness noting the confusion caused by the party atmosphere. The park was subsequently evacuated by police, leading to the cancellation of the closing party at the Brandenburg Gate, a decision made to ensure public safety.
The tragic incident left one woman dead, with three individuals sustaining life-threatening injuries, eight in serious condition, and five with minor injuries. The van involved in the attack remained at the location, visibly damaged against a tree. The suspect, identified as 21-year-old Abdul B, has ties to Islamist groups in Berlin and was recently released from juvenile detention.
Police are actively searching for Ballout, a German national of Lebanese descent born in Berlin, who is described as tall, slim, with black hair, and was wearing a black hoodie and white trousers during the attack. Berlin police spokesperson Florian Nath confirmed that the suspect’s motives remain unclear, emphasizing the ongoing efforts to locate him.
