This week, the residents of Greater Manchester are gearing up for what is expected to be the most significant by-election in the region’s history.
The decision at hand is stark: either we opt for policies that enhance convenience and affordability for all, or we empower individuals who seek to sow division among us.
I firmly believe that when the time comes, the people of Greater Manchester will unite to progress together and shape a future that caters to everyone. Throughout our history, we have charted our own course, being the birthplace of the industrial revolution, trade unions, cooperatives, suffragettes, and movements for equality.
Despite being at the forefront of economic growth in the nation, many still find life in Greater Manchester challenging. Hence, I have set a straightforward benchmark for myself if elected Mayor – every decision I make will aim to make life more affordable and convenient for all residents. One of my initial steps would be to introduce free bus travel for all 11–18-year-olds, which could save families up to £500 annually and encourage young individuals to explore opportunities freely.
The prosperity of Greater Manchester hinges on ensuring that everyone reaps the rewards of growth. Therefore, initiatives like the Good Growth Fund, aimed at spreading prosperity across all neighborhoods, are crucial. While efforts are being made nationally, I pledge to drive these changes locally as Mayor.
Realizing ‘good growth’ is not just a catchphrase; it means creating well-paying jobs, ensuring job security, and revitalizing town centers. As Mayor, I will build upon the groundwork laid by Andy Burnham and guarantee that every young person receives the necessary support for a successful career. Additionally, I plan to allocate funds generated from city center growth to establish a High Streets Fund, rejuvenating town centers and supporting local businesses while cracking down on detrimental establishments.
I am committed to combating division and grievances through a positive and optimistic campaign that reflects the can-do spirit of our community. By prioritizing tangible benefits and fostering hope for a brighter future, we can counter divisive ideologies effectively.
With unified efforts, including Andy Burnham’s leadership and the community’s resilience, the possibilities for progress are boundless.
Having experienced the struggles of living in a council house, I understand the importance of secure housing. As Manchester’s Leader, we significantly increased the construction of council and social homes last year. As Mayor, I aim to escalate this effort by building 50,000 affordable council homes across all boroughs, ensuring housing security for all.
I am proud to have Andy Burnham’s support for these plans, as he shares the commitment to providing secure housing for all, mirroring the stability I once found in my upbringing.
As a mayoral candidate, I am actively engaging with the community by participating in Parkruns across all boroughs of Greater Manchester. I appreciate the invaluable contributions of volunteers who uphold our sports and running clubs.
The upcoming by-election is expected to be closely contested, with initial polls indicating a tight race between Labour and Reform candidates. Despite other political distractions, every vote matters in electing a Mayor who champions everyday people and delivers tangible results for the community.
