At least 31 individuals lost their lives, and 33 others sustained injuries following a tragic incident where a bus careened off the road and plunged into a ravine in Ethiopia. The fatal accident occurred as the bus was en route from Dessie to the capital city of Addis Ababa early on Monday. The tragedy unfolded in the northern Amhara region, specifically in an area leading to Kombolcha.

Commander Getachew Muhiye, as quoted by the regional government’s communications bureau, confirmed the details of the devastating crash. Among the 31 fatalities was the driver, while the injured individuals suffered varying degrees of harm. Notably, initial reports had cited 28 casualties, but the toll was later updated. The delay in emergency response efforts in the area exacerbated the situation, with the lack of essential infrastructure and ambulance services hindering swift assistance.

The accident site, characterized by treacherous terrain, is notorious for its hazardous conditions, prompting ongoing investigations into the root cause of the tragedy. This incident comes on the heels of a previous calamity in December 2024, where 71 lives were lost in the southern Sidama region when a truck plunged into a river. The area’s remoteness and inadequate rescue resources were identified as contributing factors to the high death toll in that earlier incident.

In rural Ethiopia, trucks are frequently utilized for social gatherings like weddings due to their cost-effectiveness and capacity to accommodate more passengers compared to buses. Tragically, accidents are not uncommon in the region, with local residents highlighting the poor road infrastructure and the absence of safety features like speed bumps and warning signs.

The community mourns these tragic losses, emphasizing the pressing need for improved safety measures to prevent such heart-wrenching incidents from reoccurring in the future.
