Denmark’s former Queen has been readmitted to the hospital just a week after undergoing treatment for a heart attack. Queen Margrethe returned to a hospital in Copenhagen due to a blood clot in her hip following an earlier fall. The Danish Royal Palace confirmed her hospitalization, stating that a CT scan revealed the blood clot, a result of the fall. The statement mentioned that Queen Margrethe is expected to stay in the hospital for a few days and is currently stable.
King Frederik of Denmark, while attending a fun run event, expressed his intention to visit his mother when possible, and Queen Mary, his Australian-born wife, informed the press that the queen’s surgery went smoothly. Margrethe, who abdicated in January 2024 after a 52-year reign, passed the throne to her eldest son, now-King Frederik, citing health reasons for her decision.
In a speech on New Year’s Eve in 2023, Queen Margrethe discussed her decision to step down, mentioning that recent surgery made her contemplate passing on her responsibilities to the next generation. Despite initially stating she would not abdicate, health issues influenced her choice to relinquish her duties.
Queen Margrethe, known for her unconventional nature and distinctive style, received numerous state visits during her reign and was the most recent female monarch globally. Her abdication marked a historic event in Denmark, as she became the first monarch to do so in almost 900 years, handing over the throne to her son due to health limitations.
