“Prolonged Use of Acid Reflux Meds Tied to Dementia Risk”

Long-term usage of a specific type of acid reflux medication has been associated with a 33% increased risk of dementia, as per recent research findings. Individuals who consume proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) for over four-and-a-half years are more likely to develop this debilitating condition.

Acid reflux occurs when stomach acid moves into the esophagus, typically after meals or while lying down. Those suffering from acid reflux may encounter symptoms like heartburn and ulcers. Chronic acid reflux can progress to gastroesophageal reflux disease (GORD), a condition that can escalate to esophageal cancer.

GORD is prevalent, affecting up to 40% of the UK population with regular heartburn. PPIs function by diminishing stomach acid levels through targeting the enzymes responsible for its production in the stomach lining.

However, previous studies have linked these medications to a heightened risk of stroke, bone fractures, and kidney issues. The recent findings published in the journal Neurology by an American research team suggest an association between acid reflux drugs and dementia, but not a causal relationship.

Lead study author, vascular neurologist Professor Kamakshi Lakshminarayan, emphasized the importance of PPIs in managing acid reflux but highlighted the potential risks associated with their prolonged use. The study, involving over 5,700 participants aged 45 and above without dementia at the study’s onset, revealed that those on acid reflux medications for extended periods faced an increased dementia risk.

After an average follow-up period of about 5.5 years, it was observed that individuals taking PPIs for more than 4.4 years had a 33% higher likelihood of developing dementia compared to non-users. Factors such as age, sex, race, high blood pressure, and diabetes were accounted for in the analysis.

The research team did not find an elevated dementia risk in individuals using acid reflux drugs for less than 4.4 years. Prof. Lakshminarayan stressed the need for further research to validate these findings and explore the potential link between long-term PPI use and dementia risk.

While various methods exist to address acid reflux, including antacids, weight management, and dietary adjustments, the effectiveness of these approaches may vary. Individuals on these medications are advised to consult their healthcare provider before modifying their treatment regimen, as abrupt discontinuation may lead to worsening symptoms.
