A five-year-old girl named Andrea Bernard tragically passed away after enduring scalding burns in a hot bath administered by her stepmother in Thornton Heath, south London, back in 1978. Janice Nix, now 67, was found guilty of manslaughter nearly five decades later. Andrea, who suffered severe burns to half her body, succumbed to her injuries in the hospital five weeks after the incident. The child’s death was initially considered an accident until her older brother came forward in 2022 with new details of the events, leading to Nix’s conviction.

Additionally, Nix was convicted of assaulting and mistreating Andrea’s older brother, Desmond Bernard, between 1975 and 1978. Desmond revealed that Nix had a pattern of physically abusing the children for minor infractions, such as not meeting her standards for tasks like folding clothes. Nix, formerly known as Janice Thomas, had primary caregiving responsibilities for the siblings while their father was frequently away working as a chauffeur.

During the trial, Desmond tearfully shared that he initially described his sister’s death as an accident to halt Nix’s abuse towards him. He recounted instances of Nix’s brutal treatment, including beatings, burns with cigarettes, biting, and even forcing him to eat cat food. Desmond described Nix as physically strong with a robust build.

The court learned that on the day of Andrea’s tragic incident, Nix became enraged when Andrea disobeyed instructions and yelled at her before the fatal bath. Desmond recalled hearing the commotion and Nix’s commands to Andrea, followed by screams and splashing sounds. The investigation also revealed Nix’s initial false statements during the 1978 inquest, where she later admitted to providing inaccurate information due to panic over her failure to supervise Andrea properly.

Janice Nix was arrested at Heathrow Airport in 2025 and charged with manslaughter and child cruelty upon her arrival from Antigua. Despite her denials, she was found guilty. The Crown Prosecution Service expressed that Nix’s actions led to a prolonged period of abuse towards Andrea and Desmond, ultimately resulting in the tragic death of the young girl in the scalding bath. They commended Desmond’s bravery in coming forward after being coerced into silence as a child, leading to justice being served for Andrea after nearly five decades.
