Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway has undergone a successful lung transplant at a hospital in Norway. The princess, married to Crown Prince Haakon, has been fighting pulmonary fibrosis since 2018 and was recently seen using an oxygen mask at public events.
The Norwegian Royal Family confirmed that the 52-year-old princess is recovering well after the surgery, with Head of Thoracic Surgery at Oslo University Hospital, Arna Tiane, stating that the transplant was successful.
“We are delighted that the procedure has gone smoothly. Like other transplant patients, the Crown Princess will remain at Rikshospitalet for a few weeks for post-operative care,” said Are Holm, head of the Pulmonology Department at the hospital.
A statement from the Royal Family mentioned, “Her Royal Highness Crown Princess Mette-Marit underwent a lung transplant at Oslo University Hospital Rikshospitalet. The Crown Prince and Princess are grateful for the outpouring of support during this challenging time.”
Recently, Crown Prince Haakon revealed that their daughter, Princess Ingrid Alexandra, returned from studying in Australia to be with her mother due to her deteriorating health.
The palace statement follows news that Mette-Marit’s son, Marius Borg Høiby, was sentenced to four years in prison for two counts of rape. Høiby was convicted of various charges but acquitted of two rape allegations.
