A man is set to face court after being accused of arson in connection with a fire at a memorial wall in Golders Green, located in north London. The individual, identified as Ali Fallahi, aged 45 and residing in Ilford, London, allegedly initiated the suspected arson incident at the site on April 27. Following an inquiry conducted by counter-terrorism authorities, Fallahi is scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on June 18.
The charges against Fallahi allege that he deliberately damaged a memorial cabinet owned by Miga Rally through fire, with the intention of destroying or damaging the property, or acting recklessly towards its destruction. The memorial wall, established by the Miga Rally community group, commemorates numerous individuals reportedly killed during a crackdown in Iran in January. Additionally, a portion of the wall pays tribute to the victims of the Hamas attack at the Nova music festival in Israel in 2023.
The fire incident, which occurred near the wall around 12:15 am, was reported later that day at approximately 7:30 pm. Fortunately, the blaze was promptly noticed and extinguished by members of the Miga Rally community group, preventing it from spreading to the wall itself.
In response to the event, Miga Rally emphasized that the memorial wall serves as a peaceful place of remembrance, honoring the lives lost and ensuring that the victims are not forgotten. Any attempt to harm or disrespect such a site was condemned as an affront to the values of remembrance, dignity, and community unity. The group expressed hope that those responsible would be identified and held accountable.
According to the Metropolitan Police, Fallahi holds dual British and Iranian citizenship. Additionally, a 38-year-old woman was arrested in connection with the incident but was subsequently released without further action being taken.
Commander Helen Flanagan, who heads counter-terrorism policing in London, affirmed the commitment to pursue justice in cases of arson targeting the Jewish community and the Iranian diaspora. She urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the authorities.
