Heartfelt condolences have poured in for a cherished volunteer police cadet who is fondly remembered as a “lovely young lady who was well-liked by everyone” after her untimely passing from a brief struggle with cancer at the age of 15.
The Greater Manchester Police announced the sad news of Alyssa Ashcroft’s passing on April 12. Alyssa, a member of the Wigan Cadet Unit since March 2025, lost her battle with cancer after a short period of illness while attending Deanery Church of England High School.
In an official statement, a police representative expressed, “With heavy hearts, we share the news of the passing of one of GMP’s Volunteer Police Cadets – Alyssa Ashcroft, who succumbed to cancer on April 12, aged 15. Alyssa joined the Wigan Cadet Unit in March 2025 and was a student at Deanery Church of England High School in Wigan.” Warm tributes flooded in for Alyssa, with GMP Cadet lead sergeant Darren Hall describing her as a dedicated cadet.
Members of the public also took to social media to offer their condolences. One message read, “Her parents should be immensely proud of their remarkable daughter. Sending them heartfelt condolences and hoping the love and support they receive help them during this challenging time.”
Before her passing, Alyssa was recognized as member of the month in September by Beads of Courage, an organization aiding children facing serious illnesses. According to the organization’s website, Alyssa was an active hockey player until she fell ill in June.
Reports from Wigan Today revealed that Alyssa was initially diagnosed with glandular fever, leading to further medical complications. She later battled with hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) triggered by the Epstein-Barr virus, resulting in a critical health condition and a prolonged hospital stay.
Volunteer police cadets typically engage in approximately four hours of weekly activities, including educational sessions, community events, and crime prevention initiatives. Greater Manchester Police has assured that support is available for those affected by Alyssa’s passing.
