Fashion accessories retailer Claires has shuttered its 154 stores in the UK and Ireland, resulting in the loss of approximately 1,300 jobs, according to administrators.
Kroll, the administrators, confirmed that all remaining Claires stores have ceased operations, leading to employee redundancies. However, concession outlets and European stores will continue operating for the time being.
In a statement, Kroll mentioned that as of April 27th, all standalone Claires stores in the UK and Ireland have halted trading, with employees informed about their redundancy. There is potential for a new party to negotiate new leases for some of the sites with landlords.
Last September, Mayfair financiers Modella Capital acquired 156 Claires stores in the UK and Ireland, following which they anticipated some closures and job losses. The acquisition aimed to preserve more than 1,000 jobs at risk.
Unfortunately, in January of this year, the UK branch of Claires went into administration due to challenging retail conditions exacerbated by government policies, leading to the closure of the stores.
Concerns are rising for TJ Jones, formerly known as WH Smith high street business, amidst speculations of an imminent restructuring that may involve significant store closures.
The closure of 154 stores does not impact Claires’ 356 concessions, which include outlets in Asda stores, as well as its head office.
Fashion expert Priya Raj highlighted the shift in consumer preferences away from colorful, novelty jewelry towards more mainstream, curated styles influenced by social media trends, a departure from Claires’ traditional offerings.
Recent reports have indicated the closure of several Claires stores in various locations like Cheshire Oaks, Sutton Coldfield, Stockport, Watford, and Bangor.
