In the realm of popular destinations for tourists in the UK, the Cotswolds stand out as a top choice, attracting a large number of visitors. However, amidst the scenic honeycomb houses and rolling hills, there is a quaint town that has managed to preserve its charm and escape the overwhelming influx of tourists. Charlbury, located in Oxfordshire, has been gaining recognition for its emerging music scene, earning it the nickname ‘Notting Hill-on-the-Wolds’. Known for its picturesque setting and culinary delights, this postcard-perfect town has become a focal point for festivals and a vibrant pub culture, drawing in notable figures like David Beckham and former Archbishop Rowan Williams.
Charlbury, although quieter compared to neighboring tourist hotspots like Bibury and Castle Combe, comes alive in August during the Wilderness Festival at nearby Cornbury Park. The town also hosts the popular Riverside Festival in July, along with beer festivals at the beloved Rose & Crown pub in June and October.
The town’s musical influence has led to comparisons with London’s trendy Notting Hill, with The Telegraph acknowledging Charlbury as a hotspot for England’s fashionable crowd. The Pelican gastropub from Notting Hill even hosted a pop-up event in Charlbury, attended by prominent figures including former Prime Minister Boris Johnson.
Charlbury’s culinary scene boasts connections to well-known personalities, such as sourcing mushrooms from Jeremy Clarkson’s Diddly Squat Farm at the historic 17th-century pub, The Bull. The pub also serves Clarkson’s Hawkstone ales and cider, which are popular among locals.
Despite its quaint appearance reminiscent of an old English town, Charlbury surprises with diversity, exemplified by the upcoming Amarelo Bistro that will showcase Brazilian cuisine in a former Post Office building.
