Charities have cautioned that Andy Burnham’s approval of new drilling licences in the North Sea could harm the UK’s security and impact families facing financial challenges. A coalition of 19 organizations, including Oxfam and Greenpeace, penned a letter to the incoming Prime Minister expressing concerns over potential shifts away from renewable energy focus.

Reports suggest that the incoming PM will outline plans to address the cost of living and promote economic growth across the UK, possibly by greenlighting new oil and gas drilling in the North Sea. This stance may contradict Labour’s 2024 manifesto, which pledged not to issue new North Sea licences, citing minimal impact on energy costs and climate change concerns.

Various environmental groups, such as RSPB, Oxfam, Friends of the Earth, Green Alliance, and The Climate Coalition, have urged Andy Burnham against issuing new drilling permits. Greenpeace UK’s program director emphasized the importance of transparency and criticized any move that could benefit oil companies at the expense of the public.

NGO Uplift’s executive director highlighted the need for sustainable job creation in clean energy sectors rather than catering to oil and gas interests solely focused on profit. The decision on North Sea drilling is positioned as a pivotal choice between protecting corporate profits or prioritizing people’s welfare and environmental sustainability.

Energy Secretary Ed Miliband’s alignment with Labour’s anti-drilling stance has stirred debate within Westminster, potentially impacting his political trajectory. While there is lobbying in favor of new licences from energy industry leaders and trade unions, divisions persist within unions regarding further drilling activities.

Opponents of expanded drilling argue that the global oil market dynamics render increased North Sea production ineffective in reducing energy costs, while also being economically burdensome. Labour has refrained from providing a comment on the matter.
