Andy Burnham and his newly appointed Chancellor, John Healey, received positive news with a significant decrease in government borrowing for June, according to official data released by the Office for National Statistics (ONS). Government borrowing, which represents the variance between tax revenue and expenditures, amounted to £16 billion last month, marking a £7.9 billion decline from the previous June and coming in £300 million lower than the Office for Budget Responsibility’s projections.

The reduction in borrowing was mainly attributed to decreased inflation-linked debt interest costs, as highlighted by the ONS. John Healey, the former defense secretary who was unexpectedly appointed as Chancellor by Prime Minister Andy Burnham, emphasized the importance of fiscal responsibility in meeting financial targets while ensuring affordability for working individuals across the UK.

Acknowledging their longstanding collaboration and shared values, Healey expressed confidence in working alongside Burnham to foster economic stability and national security. The ONS reported that central government debt interest payments decreased to £11.8 billion in June 2026, a £5.3 billion drop compared to the previous year, though still ranking as the fourth highest June on record.

Economist Nabil Taleb from PwC UK noted the potential positive implications of the current economic strategies on public finances but cautioned against exceeding fiscal limits. He emphasized the necessity of aligning ambitious plans with sustainable funding and prudent borrowing practices to prevent financial strain and maintain stability. The upcoming months will reveal whether the newly introduced agenda alleviates pressure on the economy or exacerbates existing challenges.
