Brooke Henderson thrives under the spotlight at Canada’s LPGA tournament. The CPKC Women’s Open two-time champion showcased her comfort with the increased attention during past tournaments in Mississauga and Regina. Expressing her enthusiasm, Henderson described the week as demanding yet special, highlighting the positive energy and support she receives from fans that she leverages to her advantage.
The 28-year-old golfer from Smiths Falls, Ontario, aims for a third victory at her home tournament commencing at Edmonton’s Royal Mayfair Club this Thursday. Reflecting on her past wins, Henderson recalled the significant career milestone of winning in 2018 and the emotional experience of having her sister on the bag during the last victory.
The CPKC Women’s Open, boasting a $2.75 million prize pool, features top golfers, including world No. 1 Nelly Korda. Henderson ranks 11th among the top 25 players. Notably, with 14 tour victories, Henderson achieved top-three placements in the Women’s PGA Championship and the Evian Championship this year.
Following a tie for 29th in the AIG Women’s Open, Henderson expressed confidence in her game’s resurgence after strong showings in major tournaments this summer. The Canadian golfer emphasized the impact of personal milestones, such as becoming an aunt and getting engaged to Ricky Castro, a Minnesota Twins pitching prospect, in enhancing her on-course performance.
Henderson leads a group of 15 Canadians among 156 professionals and amateurs at the Edmonton event. The tournament marks the 52nd edition in Canada since its inception in 1973, returning to Edmonton after a hiatus, with the Royal Mayfair Club hosting for the third time. Furthermore, former three-time winner Lydia Ko aims to secure a historic fourth victory in the tournament.
Ko credited the CPKC Women’s Open for shaping her career and expressed anticipation for the tournament despite challenging weather conditions. In preparation for possible mosquito encounters due to recent rains, players like Ko and Henderson took precautions to stay protected during the competition. The event anticipates a high turnout with the attendance record set by Calgary in 2024 at Earl Grey Golf Club.
