Erlinda Tan, a Filipina Canadian and Edmonton Oilers enthusiast living in Vancouver, shares her journey of falling in love with hockey in Canada. Her hockey fandom began during the 2010 Winter Olympics when Sidney Crosby’s golden goal captivated the nation. Witnessing the jubilation across Canada after the victory, Tan was amazed by how hockey could unite a country.

After moving to Canada from the Philippines, Tan’s interest in hockey grew as she observed the sport becoming a significant part of Canadian culture. Attending her first live hockey game in 2014, watching the Edmonton Oilers face the Anaheim Ducks, marked a pivotal moment in her hockey journey. Immersed in the sea of orange-clad fans chanting for the Oilers, Tan felt the passion and camaraderie of the sport firsthand.

As Tan settled into life in Edmonton, she discovered the deep-rooted connection between the city and hockey. Embracing the Oilers’ culture, she adorned her kitchen with team towels and actively engaged in hockey discussions at work. Recognizing hockey’s pervasive influence in Canada, Tan delved into learning about hockey legends like Wayne Gretzky and the intense rivalry between Edmonton and Calgary.

Upon relocating to Vancouver in 2016, Tan’s passion for hockey was reignited when she met Mike, a devoted hockey fan. Together, they bonded over Hockey Night in Canada, indulging in special dinners and game nights. Embracing their shared love for hockey, Tan and Mike celebrate their diverse sports interests, with Tan introducing Mike to the world of tennis.

Attending hockey games at Rogers Arena in Vancouver has become a cherished tradition for Tan and Mike, where they proudly display their Canucks and Oilers jerseys. Despite their differing sports preferences, their love for each other transcends any rivalry. Tan’s journey from a curious observer to a dedicated hockey fan exemplifies how the sport has woven itself into her Canadian experience, fostering connections, sparking conversations, and strengthening relationships.

From the exhilaration of witnessing historic hockey moments to the joy of sharing game nights with loved ones, Tan’s story reflects the profound impact hockey has had on her life in Canada.
