Officials from the business department are in the final stages of preparing legislation for the government to assume full control. The announcement of these plans is expected to be part of the King’s Speech next week. Nevertheless, sources caution that details are still being finalized and mentions of British Steel in the speech could change or be expedited.
A government spokesperson emphasized the priority of safeguarding UK steelmaking and ongoing discussions with Jingye, the Chinese owner, to secure the future of the Scunthorpe site. The plant houses the UK’s last two blast furnaces, crucial for iron and steel production. Last year’s legislation gave the government operational control to prevent the furnaces from shutting down permanently.
Tensions escalated at the plant when Jingye executives clashed with workers, forcing government intervention to prevent the closure of the blast furnaces. Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds accused Jingye of unfair negotiations, prompting talks for a compensation package for Jingye’s shares in British Steel.
Despite demands exceeding £1 billion from Jingye, discussions are ongoing regarding potential compensation. The government’s goal is to secure economic control of British Steel, ensuring the sustainability of steelmaking in the UK.
