A man from the UK tragically lost his life in the wildfires in Spain while trying to save their pets, according to a close friend. Penelope Howe, 54, revealed that the man perished when flames overtook his car as they were evacuating the Los Gallardos region in Almeria province. Howe mentioned that the man was on the phone with his wife, who was in deep shock, during the incident. The couple’s last conversation occurred while he was trapped in the car with their cats.
The devastating event unfolded as rescue teams continued combing through the rugged terrain. The wildfires in the southeastern part of Spain have claimed the lives of at least 12 individuals, with 23 others still unaccounted for. Among the deceased, it is believed that four were British nationals, as their bodies were discovered in a burned-out right-hand-drive Honda Accord along with other vehicles on a deserted track near Bedar.
Spanish authorities also reported the rescue of a British couple who were found critically injured with severe burns on a significant portion of their bodies after being caught in the blazes while hiking. The couple is currently receiving intensive care treatment. Search and rescue efforts involving over 150 firefighters and 220 soldiers have been underway to contain the wildfire that has led to the evacuation of more than 1,400 individuals.
Law enforcement officials have restricted access to mountain villages as recovery operations persist. Police are working to identify the deceased individuals, as post-mortem examinations have not provided conclusive results due to the extent of burns. DNA samples have been sent to Madrid for analysis. Haunting images have surfaced showing the burnt vehicles in the convoy where the British victims were found.
Regional authorities anticipate that most of the victims will be identified as foreigners, likely from Britain and Belgium. A Belgian virologist, Thomas-Wolf Verdonckt, mourned the loss of his father in the wildfires, rejecting claims that the victims did not follow safety instructions. He insisted that no warnings were issued, leaving people unaware of the approaching danger.
Amid the ongoing heatwave with temperatures reaching 40C, fires have ravaged Southern Europe, intensifying the challenges faced by residents and emergency services.
