A lone individual armed with multiple weapons attempted to breach a Washington dinner event attended by Donald Trump, as stated by the US president. Chaos ensued at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner on Saturday evening when Trump, a previous target of an assassination attempt, was quickly evacuated by secret service agents. Despite one officer being shot, he was protected by a bulletproof vest and taken to a hospital.

The suspect, identified as Cole Tomas Allen, 31, of Torrance, California, was carrying a shotgun and a handgun. Allen, a guest at the Washington Hilton hotel hosting the event, now faces charges, including assaulting an officer with a dangerous weapon. Acting attorney general Todd Blanche mentioned that additional charges will be brought against Allen.

Following the incident, Trump addressed the media and shared images on his Truth Social platform showing the apprehended suspect. Trump referred to the perpetrator as a “lone wolf whack job” and commended the swift actions of the secret service. He emphasized that the suspect did not come close to breaching the ballroom where he was seated during the incident.

Trump praised the unity displayed in the room and the bravery of the secret service members who swiftly neutralized the threat. He expressed shock at the occurrence and announced that the event would be rescheduled within the next 30 days. Washington mayor Muriel Bowser stated that there is no indication of involvement by any other individual.

Acting attorney general Blanche highlighted the contrasting actions seen during the event, condemning the suspect’s cowardly behavior while praising law enforcement for their prompt and appropriate response. He assured that justice would be served in the case. The Washington Hilton, where the incident took place, had previously been the site of an attempted assassination of President Ronald Reagan in 1981 by John Hinckley Jr, leading to increased security measures at the property.
