Reports of a foul odor emanating from a building owned by the Return to Nature funeral home in Penrose, Colorado were brought to the attention of local authorities in October 2023. This establishment, managed by Jon and Carie Hallford, provided eco-friendly funeral services, including green burials that omitted embalming and harsh chemicals. The funeral home had gained trust within the community for its ethical practices.
Carie, the public face of the business, offered compassionate support to grieving families, while Jon handled the operational aspects as a third-generation funeral home director with 19 years of experience. Cremation services starting at $1,200 were subcontracted to a local facility, with the Hallfords delivering the ashes to families. Despite their outward display of success with luxury cars and expensive vacations, the condition of their secondary building raised suspicions.
Prompted by the noxious smell, the police investigated the building on 3 October. They were met with a disturbing sight inside – numerous bodies in various stages of decomposition stacked in rooms, with some remains dating back to 2019. The discovery of 189 bodies, neglected and unrefrigerated, shocked the authorities, who also found evidence of financial mismanagement by the Hallfords.
Further examination revealed that the Hallfords had deceived families by providing concrete mix instead of cremated remains in urns. The couple, who had absconded, were eventually apprehended in Oklahoma. The police undertook the daunting task of identifying the deceased through fingerprints and dental records, eventually leading to the demolition of the condemned building.
The investigation exposed the Hallfords’ extensive fraud, including embezzlement of funds and mishandling of bodies. Jon admitted guilt to several charges, acknowledging his grave errors, while Carie, claiming manipulation by her husband, faced legal proceedings. The victims’ families expressed deep remorse for trusting the couple, prompting legislative reforms in the funeral industry in Colorado in May 2024.
