Durham police have reported the discovery of plane wreckage in the Kawartha Lakes, Ontario area as they continue their search for a missing pilot whose aircraft is suspected to have entered the region.
Const. Nick Gluckstein stated in an email on Monday that the Trenton Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) located debris from the aircraft in the vicinity of Queen Elizabeth II Provincial Park, approximately a 45-minute drive north of the Kawartha Lakes municipality. The police have not been able to confirm if the debris belongs to the single-seat plane owned by the missing 73-year-old pilot known as David.
Reports indicate that David departed from Oshawa Airport in the plane at 8:30 a.m. on Friday and was scheduled to return by 9:30 a.m. the same day. The aircraft in question is described by the Ontario Provincial Police as a small blue homemade plane with the inscription “FOFZ” on its tail.
Described as a skilled pilot standing at five feet seven inches tall with a slender physique, David has black and grey hair along with a moustache. He typically flies in the area to the south of the Kawartha Lakes township and to the north of Lake Scugog, with the last known location of the plane believed to be near Balsam Lake.
The search efforts in the area where the wreckage was discovered will involve assistance from Trenton JRCC and Kawartha Lakes OPP, according to Gluckstein.
