Canadian men and women have progressed to the quarterfinals of the flag football global championship in Germany.
The men were defeated 37-28 by Japan, concluding second in their group with a 2-1 score. Originally set to play against Nigeria, the Canadian team was granted a win as Nigeria pulled out of the tournament due to visa challenges.
Japan’s quarterback, Take Taniguchi, threw five touchdown passes, while former CFL quarterback Michael O’Connor managed three TD passes for Canada.
In the upcoming quarterfinals, they will face American Samoa, who caused an upset by defeating the top-seeded U.S. team on Friday.

The women secured the top spot in their group with a flawless 3-0 record after defeating Japan 34-20. They are set to face Austria in the quarterfinals on Saturday. A win would propel the Canadians into the semifinals against the victor of Mexico versus Spain.
Quarterback Sara Parker threw four touchdown passes during the match against Japan, with two going to Caroline Moquin-Joubert.
