The U.S. trade envoy under Donald Trump’s administration has stated that any retaliation from Canada will not be tolerated if the U.S. president proceeds with imposing new tariffs. U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer emphasized that their focus is on safeguarding domestic supply chains, not engaging in a trade war specifically targeted at Canada but globally. Greer highlighted that any country retaliating against the U.S. will face consequences as the U.S. will take appropriate actions.

Trade discussions between Canada and the U.S. have intensified following Trump’s threat to impose a 50% tariff on numerous Canadian products from August 19 onwards, in addition to existing sectoral tariffs. Greer described the ongoing talks with Canada’s Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc as “productive.”

Greer indicated that while Canada seems inclined towards a more conciliatory approach, the U.S. is primarily focused on executing President Trump’s trade policies. The U.S. Trade Representative emphasized that America’s best interests will be prioritized, and cooperation with Canada will be sought if aligned with those interests.

Regarding the upcoming tariff deadline, Greer mentioned that Trump and Prime Minister Mark Carney will receive options to consider. Canada aims not only to prevent the impending 50% tariff but also seeks to address current tariffs on sectors like automobiles and steel.

Recent reports revealed that the U.S. presented a new proposal to reduce some sectoral tariffs, although not meeting Canada’s desired extent. Meanwhile, industry sources disclosed that Canada is willing to address U.S. concerns related to provincial alcohol bans, dairy quotas, and auto tariffs.

Bloc Québécois Leader Yves-François Blanchet expressed skepticism about an imminent trade agreement and urged caution on conceding ground in dairy negotiations. Blanchet emphasized the importance of protecting Canada’s supply management system, as outlined in Parliament’s legislation.

In response to criticisms from Canadian officials, Greer defended the U.S.’s stance on trade issues with Canada, particularly citing alcohol bans and retaliatory tariffs. Former Canadian ambassador to the U.S., Frank McKenna, countered these claims, asserting Canada’s right to retaliate against unfair and illegal measures imposed by the U.S., emphasizing the principle of self-defense against unjust actions.
