A trial has commenced for Duane (Keffe D) Davis, a former gang member, accused of involvement in the 1996 shooting that led to the death of renowned hip-hop icon Tupac Shakur. The trial, held in Las Vegas, focuses on Davis facing a murder charge related to Shakur’s demise. Despite being in custody since 2023, Davis has pleaded not guilty.
During the trial, prosecutors will not aim to prove that Davis directly committed the shooting but will instead try to establish his role as a “shot caller” within the group that targeted Shakur on the Las Vegas Strip in 1996. The jury selection process began with Davis seated beside his attorney as potential jurors were questioned by Nevada Judge Carli Kierny.
Shakur’s cousin, William Leslane, expressed mixed feelings about the trial, acknowledging the potential for accountability but lamenting the delayed pursuit of justice. Leslane emphasized that justice should have been promptly sought after Shakur’s tragic death, which occurred three decades ago.
