The debate regarding the future of the Kennedy Center intensified on Thursday as supporters of U.S. President Donald Trump within the board initiated new measures to honor him through physical modifications to the renowned arts establishment, potentially defying a federal court ruling.

In a lengthy virtual meeting, the board decided to include Trump’s name on the building’s facade, proposing it to be named “The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts Restored and Renovated By President Donald J. Trump.” Additionally, the plaza in front of the center would be dedicated to Trump, with plans to close most of the venue for approximately two years to facilitate extensive renovations.

These actions, as outlined by Representative Joyce Beatty, an Ohio Democrat and ex-officio board member, challenge the authority of U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper. Judge Cooper previously ruled in May that the addition of Trump’s name on the building was unlawful and ordered its removal, while also blocking the planned two-year closure, citing flaws in the board’s decision-making process.

Beatty criticized the recent developments as an attempt to circumvent the court’s decision and violate congressional statutes. The Kennedy Center’s response to these proceedings is yet to be provided.

The meeting primarily deliberated on the necessary closures for safety improvements and renovation work, with the center’s management proposing three closure options for consideration by the board. Ultimately, the board opted to close the building for two years, with potential limited programming to be hosted in an outdoor area known as the Reach.

The decision to proceed with the extended closure, along with the efforts to honor Trump, may raise concerns about the board’s thorough consideration of alternative options.

Trump’s influence over the Kennedy Center signifies a unique display of presidential authority during his second term, characterized by swift leadership changes and contentious physical alterations to iconic Washington landmarks. The Kennedy Center’s plight for renovations is underscored by the institution’s dire need for repairs and upgrades, emphasizing the necessity of comprehensive restoration efforts.

The legal battles and institutional transformations prompted by Trump’s tenure have captured public attention, reflecting a broader agenda to reshape the nation’s capital and leave a significant mark on its physical landscape.
