Europe is currently experiencing a scorching and dry summer, with wildfires continuing to rage in parts of Greece and France. The continent has been warming at a faster rate than the global average, heating up more than twice as fast since the 1980s, as reported by the European Union’s Copernicus climate service.
The rising temperatures and prolonged drought have made vegetation drier and more prone to catching fire, leading to faster-spreading wildfires. In Greece, the wildfires near Athens broke containment lines following a tragic midair collision between two helicopters that resulted in the death of two crew members. Fortunately, a British national working for the Greek firefighting service survived the crash and is expected to be discharged from the hospital this week after a successful recovery.
Meanwhile, in France, firefighters are on high alert near Bordeaux as they monitor potential flare-ups in an area four times larger than Paris that is still ablaze. In the Athens region, hundreds of people have been evacuated due to the high-risk fire conditions, with strong winds reigniting flames and causing damage to homes, farms, and infrastructure, including the closure of a major highway.
The situation remains critical in Greece, with areas surrounding the capital facing ongoing high risks as temperatures are forecasted to increase further. Over 1,000 individuals have been evacuated from the seaside resort of Porto Germeno and neighboring regions, with more than 250 people rescued by boats from beaches in the vicinity.
Fire Service spokesperson Yiannis Artopios described the fire as challenging, with firefighting efforts supported by 12 water-dropping planes and 11 helicopters in the affected area. The blaze was attributed to a faulty power line from a wind farm, leading to the arrest of two contractors on charges of negligent arson. Authorities reported that 33 individuals were arrested between June 29 and August 2 for starting fires, with most cases involving negligence related to farming activities conducted despite local bans, such as welding.
Emergency crews are working tirelessly to contain the fires, with the army employing tracked earth movers to create firebreaks and specialist units venturing into forested areas on foot to extinguish any remaining embers. As wind speeds typically increase in the afternoon, the firefighting teams are racing against time to prevent further devastation.
