A mother from the UK initially thought she had strained a muscle after taking 20,000 steps on a vacation but was devastated to discover she was actually battling a terminal illness. Laura Ann Fitt, 40, from Ashfield, Nottinghamshire, attributed her stumbling and muscle twitches to overexertion during a trip to New York City with her spouse in July 2025. Despite believing her symptoms were due to a magnesium deficiency, they persisted, prompting her to seek medical help in August 2025.

Following extensive testing over a year, Laura was diagnosed with motor neurone disease (MND) shortly after turning 40. She expressed the most difficulty during the period of uncertainty before her diagnosis, emphasizing the stress of not knowing her condition. MND, a life-limiting and terminal ailment affecting the nerves and spinal cord, has an average life expectancy of two to three years.

As a healthcare worker, Laura initially downplayed her symptoms but grew suspicious during a neurology appointment in January. By May, she relied on a wheelchair for appointments as her condition worsened. A lumbar puncture ruled out autoimmune conditions before Laura received confirmation of her MND diagnosis in July.

Concerned for her family’s future, especially her son Alex, who is blind and autistic, Laura is focused on creating lasting memories with her loved ones. She aims to raise awareness about early symptom recognition and encourages individuals to advocate for themselves when experiencing persistent health issues. Through a GoFundMe campaign, she seeks financial support to enhance the quality of her remaining time with her family.
