Thousands of individuals, including tourists, were forced to evacuate the island of Crete today due to wildfires that tragically claimed the lives of three firefighters in Greece. Two firefighters lost their lives on the island while battling a fire near Krya Vrysi in the Rethymno region, with a third firefighter perishing on the Greek mainland near Gytheio in the Peloponnese.

With gusts reaching 125km/h (77mph) on the island, approximately 8,000 people were evacuated from their residences overnight but were eventually permitted to return. In parallel, in France, notable figures George and Amal Clooney were compelled to evacuate their residence due to the fires.

Expressing uncertainty about the fate of their home in Brignoles, George Clooney shared his concerns with the town’s mayor, Didier Bremond, affirming their dedication to aiding the community during this crisis.

The Clooneys, who made France their permanent residence in 2021, were granted French citizenship alongside their twins, Ella and Alexander, in December.

Greece, France, Spain, and Turkey are grappling with devastating fires and droughts, with ongoing blazes in Spain and Portugal. Despite some residents in certain regions being able to return home, the fire on Crete remains a significant threat, destroying properties and agricultural land.

Evacuated individuals in Rethymno sought refuge in temporary shelters, describing the experience as frightening. The fire outbreak coincided with a peak tourism period on the island.

In response to the emergency, hundreds of firefighters have been deployed to combat the flames, with Hellenic Fire Service chief Theodoros Vagias extending condolences for the fallen firefighters and announcing their burial arrangements.

The fires have also taken a toll in Spain, where fatalities included citizens from various countries. Meanwhile, fires are ravaging parts of neighboring Portugal.
