Two British individuals tragically lost their lives when the railing of their hotel balcony collapsed in Lanzarote, as revealed in an inquest. The victims, identified as Darren Silcox, aged 56, and Nicholas Thomas, aged 54, hailing from Cwmbran, Wales, fell from a balcony at a flat in the Canary Islands.

The incident occurred in October 2025 at the Galeon Playa Apartments in Costa Teguise, where Darren, a shop owner, and his friend Nicholas fell into the atrium stairwell around 1:30 am following a night out. Darren passed away two hours after the fall, while Nicholas was flown back to the UK for medical treatment. Unfortunately, Nicholas succumbed to his injuries nearly ten months later on July 10 at University Hospital in Llandough.

Spanish authorities, particularly the Civil Guard, have initiated an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the tragic event, focusing on potential negligence in maintenance or safety protocols that could have led to the fatal accident.

Responding to the incident, emergency services arrived at the holiday apartments post-midnight, confirming Darren’s demise due to injuries sustained in the fall. According to Gwent Coroner Rose Farmer, an inquest revealed that Nicholas fell between 15 to 22 feet as a wooden bannister gave way. Initially treated at Doctor Jose Molina Orosa Hospital in Lanzarote, Nicholas was later repatriated to the UK for further care.

A previous inquest into Darren’s passing indicated that he suffered a traumatic brain injury, skull fractures, and lacerations. The proceedings have been temporarily postponed, with a joint inquest planned for April 14 next year to delve further into the tragic deaths.
